Travel Tips from a Frequent Flyer
 by Ellen

Whether you’re jetting off around the world or staying closer to home, preparation is key. Here are some nifty packing tips from a frequent flyer:

Do I really need this?
It seems obvious but when flying, luggage room is precious. Or more specifically, weight allowance is precious. It is easy to chuck all your favorites in the suitcase, ending up with an overweight and impractical collection of items once you arrive. Mix and match and give your outfit choices some thought. What can you re-wear, recycle and restyle?

Minis! minis!
Until recently, I thought buying the mini containers to decanter beauty products into was a waste of both money and time. Plus, I was never quite sure how much of each I would need – no use running out of the essentials half way through your trip. However, with a little experience and finding that I would frequently end up with an excess of everything  – okay, I don't need 500ml of cleanser for one week – I've realized the merits of this ingenious little bottles. Yes, you have to shell out a little in the first pace but long term it will certainly equal more packing space and less wastage. Plus, you can save space for bargains at duty-free – a perfect excuse to revamp your cosmetic collection for a slither of the price.

Handbag savvy
Most airlines will now allow two items of hand luggage – a cabin bag for the overhead and a personal bag – use this space wisely!

Don't be the idiot who leaves liquids in their bag!
Yes, I am one of those eye rollers at security when someone holds up the queue for an extra five, ten or even fifteen minutes while they have to empty the entire contents of their bag. Don't let that person be you.

Check-in online
This one cannot be stressed enough. And often you can also pay extra for that excess baggage for discounted prices online. Not only can you normally choose your seat online and print your boarding pass, meaning you can fly on through to bag drop and security, but some airlines will actually charge you extra for not checking in before arriving at the desk. It's easy, convenient, and time-saving.

Can you lift?
I'm not a weightlifter; my biceps are pretty unimpressive and I'm also kinda short. Hauling my suitcase into the overhead locker and off the conveyor belt is a bit of a challenge for me. Although it may be an option to look alluringly towards a muscular stranger, I'm all for independence. So, my motto is: if you pack it, you lift it!

Do a little research
We might not have the time or resources to plan every single detail of our trip before we leave home, plus spontaneity is definitely not a bad thing. Having said that, a little bit of knowledge can go a long way. Find out the must-see places and being in the know regarding the local language and currency can be money saving and time well spent. Airport waiting time is the perfect opportunity to swot up on your research. Travel geeky is cool geeky.

Wherever you’re off to, travel smart!
