Homesickness is inevitable. No matter how near or far you might be when you first fly the nest, a little bout of homesickness will sneak up and surprise you like an ugly old friend. However, all is not lost. There are plenty of survival techniques that can help prevent homesickness reaching critical level and keep you looking on the bright side of life.
Sometimes feeling homesick isn't really something you can avoid, but finding little ways to see it through is key to surviving your travels, however far from home you may be.
Surround yourself with new people
Meeting and making friends is a key part of any new adventure. You never know where you will find your next BBF or someone who you click with from the word go. Sometimes the prospect of initiating the first conversation can be a little daunting. Persevere. Get yourself out and about in your new city and find where all the cool kids hang out – or at least a cosy coffee shop that serves a good latte or a popular cocktail bar on a Friday night. Making meaningful friendships takes time but keeping yourself surrounded with new, interesting and positive people is a great place to start.
Have a good cry
Sometimes being self-indulgent is perfectly acceptable. Let it out, wash your face and move on.
Limit social media stalking
Talking with friends and family from home is important but don't let it become all-consuming. It is good to keep in touch with the people you miss and those who still make you smile from afar. However, constantly being glued to your phone or laptop makes it hard to distance yourself or appreciate where you are and enjoy your new life.
Exercise
Fantastic distraction. Feel Good. Look Good. Release good endorphins.
Keep your goals in sight
Remembering why you upped sticks in the first place is important if you are feeling a little lonely. If you are traveling the globe, remember why you wanted to see the world. If you have started a new job, think about your career prospects. Whatever your motivation is, keep it in the forefront of your mind and keep looking ahead.
Take up a new hobby
Learn something new – whether it be a second language, a useful life skill, something creative or a high energy sport. Keeping your mind busy is a great way to distract yourself whilst meeting new people and improving your skill set at the same time.Sometimes feeling homesick isn't really something you can avoid, but finding little ways to see it through is key to surviving your travels, however far from home you may be.
