Life is a journey and you have two options: let the journey take you or choose your own direction towards your dream and ideal destination. There are pros and cons on both sides (see Amy's article "Put The Plans Away" here), but being an avid planner and goal setter, I'm going to share just a few tips which will help you plot and plan your journey to the future of your dreams. Dorothy found her heart's desire at the end of the yellow brick road and so can you!
ONE: Decide on your destination.
Imagine you have a crystal ball and take a look at the you of the future. Disregard any limitations such as money – the sky is the limit. Where do you live? Who are you with? What do you do as a job? How do you spend your free time?
If you're struggling to get your imagination into gear, try making a vision board on Pinterest including ideas for your dream house, your dream job, etc.
TWO: Take the first step.
You might feel as though your dreams are currently so far out of reach that you can't possibly ever get there, but the truth is you don't know for sure unless you try! The first step to reaching your dream future is committing to the journey, taking a positive outlook, and beginning to envision your ambitions as goals rather than unattainable dreams.
THREE: Map it out.
The journey to your dreams is going to be long and hard, and you will most likely lose your way if you don't have a map. Decide what you would realistically have to achieve in the next year to make the distance between you and your dreams shorter. The key is to make these goals achievable (maybe have no more than five goals at one time), specific, and measurable (make sure you will know for sure when you've met each goal). Split these goals into monthly, weekly and even daily goals. Smaller steps are more easily achieved, and will allow you to keep up pace and motivation.
FOUR: Find companions along the way.
I wonder whether Dorothy would have reached the Emerald City if she hadn't found the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion? Getting the support of your loved ones is key to maintaining motivation and achieving your dreams. If possible, also surround yourself with those who have similar ambitions; you can share valuable information and they'll be able to relate to any problems that you may come across. As long as you have more companions than Wicked Witches in your life, you'll reach the Emerald City in no time!
FIVE: Be prepared for rough terrain and forks in the road.
Your journey isn't likely to be a straight, flat road; you're sure to encounter problems and difficult choices along the way. Take a fresh look at your plans on a regular basis, and don't be afraid to review and revise.
