The heartbreak handbook : Songs for every stage of your breakup
 by Megan

When you’re fed up of clichéd advice and checking every inch of your ex’s social media, here are some songs for each stage of your break up, which may or may not help you get through your heartbreak.

Stage One: The ‘I’m never going to find anyone like you again… I haven’t slept in three days or even had a shower… how will I live without you?’ stage

Ryan Adams – The Sun Also Sets
Just don’t drink a bottle of wine and lounge on your sofa singing this at 3pm like I did last Tuesday. (Or do. I thought it was a day well spent.)

George Michael – Careless Whisper
Like swirling your wine before you drink it adds to the flavour, drunkenly singing this song as loud as you can enhances the meaning.

Sinead O’Connor  Nothing Compares to You
If you’re feeling confident, putting this on at a party after 2am and singing your heart out is a sure winner.

Cat Power – Metal Heart

Stage Two: The ‘I don’t need you anyway’ stage – usually resulting in a terrible haircut and a new keep fit regime…which will last a week
Katy Perry – Part of Me, Roar, or even Wide Awake
Don’t judge me. These songs will heal you.

In fact, I don’t have any more suggestions. I’m pretty sure Katy Perry is all you need.

Stage Three: He’s taking our relationship status down. There is no way we’ll be getting back together. All these workouts for nothing... now we’re really over. (Similar feelings to stage one)
Nothing compares to you (again) but this time you sing it even louder and drunker.

Jeff Buckley – Lover You Should Have Come Over
‘Too young to hold on, but too old to just break free and run’. The man is a genius.

Dusty Springfield – You don’t have to say you love me
A classic.

Usher  Climax
Sometimes I think there’s a bit of Usher in all of us.

Stage Four: When you’re starting to see the light, realising things aren’t that bad, and that you don’t need anyone because you are an independent woman!
Simon and Garfunkel – I am a rock
For the times when you strongly believe all you need are books and tea.

Cat Stevens  First Cut is the deepest

Destiny’s Child – Survivor
Just don’t drunkenly text the lyrics of this to your ex…They won’t think it’s funny.

And lastly... Taylor.
The day you accept your break up is over is also the day you accept Taylor Swift as the divine being who knows exactly how you feel. If Taylor Swift can’t help you... nothing else will.

Don't forget, you can listen to and subscribe to all our playlists over on Spotify!
