5 Transitional Autumn Staples
 by Elisha

Despite having an unseasonably warm September, with the welcome of October it is a certainty that we can soon expect to feel that notorious autumn chill settling in. Sharp morning air, leaves the colour of wine, and a toffee apple or two are just some of the wonderful novelties that come in tow with the season. However, with a change of weather, comes a change of wardrobe. Nothing drastic, mind you… I have collected together a handful of pieces that will easily filter into your current wardrobe without worry and keep you cozy and warm as we draw closer to wintertime…

A sturdy shoe: Drizzle, showers and hail.… Being based in the UK means ALWAYS keeping one eye open when it comes to rain… particularly so as the year draws to a close. Bearing that in mind, I definitely recommend swapping over your sandals for a closed-toe alternative as, let’s face it, wet toes are never the end result of a good day. For instance, brogues, loafers and monk shoes are a lovely everyday option that will endure the elements, as well as giving off a cool, preppy vibe. Go masculine with the classic Dr Martens 1461s or look light on your feet with a soft pair of loafers… there’s something for everyone! You’re not limited to patent black either; play with colours and textures such as mulberry, snakeskin and metallic. As for me, I’ve spotted a pair of pony hair lace-ups from Topshop that have had me under their spell for quite some time now…

Wrap/shawl/cape thingies: It seems every shop has their own name for this scarf/blanket hybrid, but the important thing to remember is this: they’re a little bit of bed that you can take with you wherever you may go! Amazing, I know. Perhaps a little homeless chic, but incredibly comfy all the same.
Elisha's Pick: Reversible Cape - ASOS

Midi length: Now I’m a massive London Fashion Week scout, so for those of you who take great pleasure in a good dose of street style, you’ll be interested to know that knee-length was the length for all of those quirky London girls attending the SS15 shows. Midi-skirts, dresses and culottes are all great pieces to add into your autumn uniform as they fend off the slight chill, whilst still nodding towards the shorts and skirts you wore all summer through. Midi skirts can be very feminine, a lot being made out of lace and tulle, or  some are toughened up by different sorts of leather.  If you’re leaning more towards the idea of culottes, I give to you a word of warning: they are the world’s biggest man repeller… and my personal favourite.

Waistcoats/gilets: Layering can be pretty tricky business… the biggest issue being that you can risk looking like Joey Tribbiani in that episode of Friends where he wears all of Chandler’s clothes. If, like me, you live in fear of this, I think waistcoats or gilets can be a really good way of fending off the slight autumn bite without having to put on your bulky winter coat, only to become boiling hot after ten minutes. Gilets can come in the form of faux fur or quilting, which are great for casual, off-duty looks. However, if tailoring is more your thing, long-line waistcoats are starting to make a debut in places such as Zara and Missguided for really reasonable prices.

Houndstooth: If I remember rightly, hounds tooth print was a big thing around 10 years ago? Well… it’s back, which is a blessing for all of us monochrome lovers. Scarves and cigarette pants are my personal favourite way to wear the trend, however stores such as New Look are offering it up in every way you could think of. There’s something for absolutely every shape and size.

And there we have it… five things I could possibly go through life without, but definitely wouldn’t want to! Is it possible for me to be my own enabler? Anyway, I hope this feature was useful to some, or even just one of you! If you’ve stayed with me up until this point, I’m beyond flattered, as that was quite a waffle.

Until next time, Happy Halloween!
