making a comeback

Lost & Found Fashion Trends

Trends often come and go, and that has been the ritual in the fashion industry for aeons. If you are a fashion lover, whether you are a man or a woman, you’re probably always ready to welcome a revival of another era when it comes to your outfit of the day. To rock a piece of clothing that you found in your mom's closet — or even better, your grandma’s closet — is a serious achievement, like bringing the past back to life. Whether it’s a bomber jacket or bell-bottoms, denim or brights from the 80s, the past is always cherished in the world of fashion. Credit to the subcultures that gave rise to these trends and had such an important role amongst the youth, reflecting their identity and their individuality in the society of their time.

These lost and found looks are often a blessing for us fashion enthusiasts. Reoccurrence in style has a huge importance when it comes to designing and styling. It gives the chance to renew and improve classic styles and trends, avoiding any mistakes made in the past, creating a polished version of those outfits that made such a statement, but faded away with time.

One of the statement items that made a big comeback to the streets in 2014 was the crop top, reborn as a result of the recent 90s revival. Sported with mom jeans, in a variety of colours, styles and shapes, girls were seen showing off their mid-drifts with pride — with fringing or sans fringing.

If we’re talking about lost and found trends in 2014 and we neglect to mention platforms, it would definitely be unfair. Girls — and sometimes boys too — were seen strutting down the streets in their trusty pair of platforms. And again, they came in several different shapes and sizes; sandals, trainers, and a new addition to the platform family for those less sure on their feet… the flatform.

I remember my first pair of platforms. I felt like a proper disco girl from the 70s. They were sparkly and blue and I loved dancing in them. Maybe not the best choice of shoes for everyday wear but they were perfect for dancing the night away.

As this winter is still going strong, there is one wardrobe staple that is not just a want, but also a necessity — coats. And talking about coats, I have to confess my love and admiration for the duster coat. An item of clothing originally created to protect the clothing of horsemen in Western America has been reworked and reborn, becoming a modern staple amongst both men and women. This past year, the light, loose-fitted long coats were a big yes for either a casual get together with your mates or a formal outing, and it seems like it’s here to stay for a while. These coats add glamour, class and a chic sophisticated look to your fashion persona. Who doesn’t want to resemble the next ‘it’ girl?

As we have mentioned coats and jackets, it would be unjust not to mention the return of the bomber jacket, originally a favourite in the 1980s. With its return to the rails last year, the bomber jacket gained quite a lot of popularity amongst the youth. Multi coloured, sequined, floral and monochrome; there’s a bomber jacket to suit everyone’s tastes, and the sporty look is the look for A/W 2014. I hope it doesn’t lose its popularity for a while.

And last but not least — fur. Truth be told, fur has never really lost its glamour and charm since the 1920s. Can someone take me back to that fancy era of pearls, fur and gems? Fur coats, fur tops, fur bags; I am so in love with fur! I am guessing it is not just me, but that every girl has her fur moment? Feeling the soft fuzzy texture with just one touch instantly takes you to another world. Let’s be clear, I definitely don’t promote real fur or killing animals in any way, but faux fur is readily available and is huge at the moment. So, I won’t mind loading my wardrobe with everything fur.

In truth, the list of lost and found fashion trends is never ending. What’s in today, will be out tomorrow, but will most likely be back on trend again in the future! Fashion goes round in a circle, with no beginning to it and most definitely with no end… a never-ending joy ride with endless possibilities.
